Borneo is a magnet for visitors keen to explore this land where nature is king and the national parks are an ideal starting point. Bako in Sarawak boasts ancient rainforest, dramatic waterfalls and a rocky shoreline. Take a boat to reach the lake at the heart of Batang Ai to look for orang-utans, gibbons and hornbills. Sabah’s Mulu National Park has vertical cliffs, deep gorges, hidden valleys and immense caves and the rainforest on the slopes of Kota Kinabalu is home to delightful orchids and carnivorous pitcher plants.Wildlife, Flora and Fauna Verdant rainforest and the tropical climate have created a natural sanctuary which teems with wildlife, colourful birdlife and thousands of plants. You are bound to encounter comic-looking proboscis monkeys and if you are lucky you will see elephants in the wild. Star of the show is the orang-utan, so head to Sepilok for a chance to see this shy animal. Keep your eyes peeled for hornbills, kingfishers and woodpeckers, just a handful of the prolific birdlife you will see, but don’t forget to look down for orchids, pitcher plants and maybe even the giant Rafflesia.
